Glue is Not the Only Answer

June 30th, 2010

We get more questions everyday on whether you have to use lace wig glue in order to wear a lace front wig. The answer is simply, no, you don’t. Everyone’s hair loss or styling needs are different so lace wig adhesives are not always necessary. Some have total hair loss while some just have persistent problem areas. There are a variety of options for wearing your lace wig. That’s one of the main reasons they are so appealing.

If you have hair at your hairline, you can actually just leave a little of your own hair out and bobby pin the wig down behind your hairline. A lot of people ask whether bobby pinning their wig down is secure. We are still mindful of the ill fitting wigs of years past and have images of wigs flying off a person’s head on a windy day. This is not the case with a prosthetic wig that is designed to hug the contours of your head. If your lace wig is properly sized, bobby pinning it down is very secure. Just make sure to place the pins all around your head, especially at your temples, behind the ears, and at the nape. Any extra pins are for added security. If you’re looking for inspiration on how this could look, check out a couple of Oprah’s past season shows. This past season she wore her own hair out quite a bit but also wore pieces that matched her own hair in color and texture. You can do the same and place the wig behind your natural hairline. It’s a very natural look!

If you have hair loss at your hairline or complete hair loss, pinning the wig down may not work. You do have a few cap design options, though, to achieve a natural look. You can custom order your lace wig with a glue-less cap design. We have a few options to choose from and, yes, they are also secure. The wig will fit to hug your head for security. Accurate measurements will be important for the best fit, and a head template is even better. If you’d like to learn more about these options, please feel free to contact us for a consultation.

Rocking It With Bangs

April 7th, 2010

Jennifer Hudson seems to be back to the swing of things! Not that she was taking a big break or anything, but it seems like things are getting really busy for her. She’s a style icon and from the looks of it, a hair enthusiast, because her hair is always on point! She always has the most stylish dos and is always looking great. Jennifer is making the media rounds with her new sponsorship of Weight Watchers! She’s lost some weight and is looking great as usual. She’s rocking long stresses with a precision cut bang. Very cute! In some interviews, you’ll see the hair sleek and straight and in some others, the hair is curled into a soft body wave. This is a great style that fits almost any woman.

If this is a look you’ll like to try with your lace wig, you can always have your wig made with the hair ventilated toward the face (ventilation refers to the hand knotting of hair onto the base of the cap). This way, you don’t have to style and bump the hair in your face everyday. The hair will naturally fall toward your face at all times. In terms of ordering, there’s just a few things we need to know to get your bangs exactly the way you want them. You can learn here on how to measure your lace wig for bangs.

The below picture shows a lace front wig which was ventilated with bangs framing the face. A great advantage of having your bangs ventilated toward your face, is that the bangs will lay very flat. These are longer bangs, per the client’s request, but you can have yours cut to your desired length.

Got Alopecia Areata? Learn How to Get Financial Support for Your Lace Wig

March 5th, 2010

You might be surprised to know that there are little financial resources out there to help adults with the purchase of lace wig hair prosthesis, also known popularly as lace wigs. Though some insurance companies do cover lace wigs, there may be a lot of stipulations on coverage or under-coverage in general. There is a great resource, however, available through the National Alopecia Areata Foundation Ascot Fund. The Ascot Fund was established to help adults and children with alopecia areata by providing financial assistance up to $500. We’ve had the pleasure of working with the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF) by providing lace wigs to their award recipients. Unlike many insurance company procedures, this is not a reimbursement plan so you do not have to come up with the funds upfront. We think this is just wonderful because this puts much less financial strain on the award recipients.

At the time of this writing, the program requires you to obtain an invoice from the company you choose for your custom hair piece. If you need help in customizing your lace wig hairpiece, please send an email and we will set up an appointment to go over your custom lace wig and provide you with the documentation you need to apply for the award. You can also fill out any one of our custom order forms to receive a quote or invoice. We can get started on your quote for the Foundation with this information. Keep in mind that we do include ongoing store promotions or discounts in your invoice.
Here are the steps to receive an invoice from us:

1)    Fill out a custom order form for your choice wig
2)    Add the order to your shopping cart
3)    The shopping cart will show your custom order details. Copy the entire order details
4)    Paste the order details into an email to us indicating your request for documentation for the NAAF’s Ascot Fund.

How a Precision Hair Cut Can Make All the Difference On Your Lace Wig.

March 2nd, 2010

We thought it would be great to share two pictures of the same lace wig before and after a precision hair cut. Well, we happen to think the style on picture #2 frames the mannequin’s face better by giving the style an updated and chic look. See how taking off just a few inches and styling really affect the final look? In the before picture, the hair is styled away from the face and the layers have little shape. With the precision cut, we add shape to the layers and style some of the hair toward the face.

You can have your lace wigs cut by a local stylist or order any one of our precision cut styles. If you don’t see a style you like, you can always order a custom lace wig with your own pictures. Keep in mind that we do need some good shots in order to duplicate the style. You can even send us an old wig to duplicate! Sometimes you just have that one wig that you can’t part with- you just love the density, the color, the cut, etc.  We can definitely make a duplicate for you to keep on hand.

When getting your lace wig cut, just remember to pick a professional that knows what they’re doing! Frankly, not every stylist knows how to cut hair well. Remember, the hair is not growing back so if it’s cut too short, for example, there’s no going back! Always err on the side of caution by ordering a slightly longer length to give the stylist room to work with.

Sleep Protection

February 15th, 2010

We learned previously that friction with certain materials can cause breakage and tangling with our hair.  This is not only true for materials we wear but also true for materials we sleep on.  Cotton is a material that can cause breakage and tangling with your hair.  Wrapping your hair and tying it with a silk or satin scarf for sleep can not only reduce friction that causes breakage but also keeps the flow of your hairstyle intact.  It is also a good idea to have a satin pillowcase for extra protection in case your scarf comes off in the middle of the night.

Good night, and sleep worry free!

Winterizing Your Hair, by Chaunteese

January 8th, 2010

Since having my new De Novo Hair full lace wig I have acquired a number of suggestions that will help clients keep their wig healthy and tangle free. Anyone who has spent even one single day in Chicago during the winter can contest to the brutality that Mother Nature unleashes on the body, skin and hair. That’s why here in Chi, we have to bundle up! However, the materials that our hats and coats are made from oftentimes are not friendly to our hair.  In fact, clients oftentimes, come in to the salon with breakage and evidence of unhealthy hair care.  What causes this breakage is friction, which is caused by movement between the materials of our garments which comes in contact with our hair.  This friction can also cause tangling with your hair addition, especially at the nape. However, there are ways to help reduce that friction: 1) Try to wear garments made from the material Satin or Silk.  So, before you put on your winter hat and coat, you should put on a silk or satin bonnet or scarf to protect your hair.  This will provide adequate protection, in most instances, against the drying effects of Mother Nature’s brutal winds and cold temperatures. In addition, this will reduce tangling as well as breakage. Stay warm and don’t worry so much about your hair!

Let’s Talk Fitness with Alex!

October 24th, 2009

Hair is just one part of our body. How well it looks and behaves has a lot to do with what’s going on with our bodies as a whole. Today Alex talks about 3 key steps to better health practices.

As a Personal Trainer, I am keenly aware of the increasing interest in health and fitness. The problem is, however, that there is too much misinformation on the topic. I am appalled and offended at many of the websites and magazine articles I see touting the latest fitness crazes and diet pills that are often unhealthy and ineffective. I am also shocked by how many people I see go to the gym day after day and see little or no improvement in their health and fitness levels.

No matter what you read in the magazines or see on the infomercials late at night, your health and fitness comes down to what I like to call the, “3 Keys to Fitness.” They are cardiovascular exercise, resistance training, and proper nutrition.

Let’s start with the dreaded cardio! Cardio is any activity that places strain on your cardiovascular system. It can be riding a bike, going for a run, jumping rope, or power walking. All forms are equally beneficial for weight loss and increased heart health. I recommend that people start slow and always build up their endurance before they increase their intensity. The most common mistake I see people make with their cardio routines is, well, that they are routine. Walking for 30 minutes every day at the same pace is great for general health and maintenance, but those looking to get in better shape or lose weight need to challenge themselves a little more. A few recommendations for spicing up a boring cardio routine include increased distance, trying different types of cardio, or trying interval training. For instance, you can alternate between walking for three blocks and then running for one block.

Next up, let’s look at resistance training. Resistance training is beneficial for a number of reasons. It increases lean muscle mass, helps increase bone density, and keeps joints and connective tissue strong. When most people think of resistance they think of big muscular guys grunting, squatting hundreds of pounds and flexing their biceps in the mirror. In actuality, strength training can be done with machines, free weights, cables, bands, and even your own body weight. Whether resistance training is done once a day or once a week it needs to be challenging and varied. The human body adapts quickly. My biggest recommendations are to keep workout logs so progress can be marked and goals can be set. Also avoid doing the same routine for more than a month.

The most important factor in your health and fitness is definitely your nutritional habits. People always ask me which diet I recommend (Atkins, low-fat, Beyonce Diet…). I always say none. Balanced nutrition over time will keep you feeling and performing at your best. My nutritional recommendations to keep you healthy and fit include: Eat small meals frequently, make sure all meals include good carbs, good fats, and protein, avoid processed food as much as possible, and drink plenty of water.

No matter where you are in your journey to a healthier and fit lifestyle, working on these three areas will help you get to where you want to be.

Alex Nsiah-Kumi Jr. is the founder and president of Paramount Personal Training Inc., a Chicago based mobile health and fitness service that includes personal training, yoga, nutrition, and massage therapy at whatever locations are needed.
